Parents/Caregivers,

Last Tuesday, most Australians focused on the race that stops a nation. Even if you never have a bet all year, most people take a risk and wager a little on Melbourne Cup Day. It is a day that most Aussies look forward, to dress up, to party. What would Melbourne Cup Day be without a sweep? Just about everyone goes in one.
Since the initial race in 1861, the Melbourne Cup has captured the imagination of not only Australians, but all race goers around the world.
History records the memorable events of the Cup. Archer was the first horse to win it twice in a row. Then we have to jump nearly thirty years to the great horse, Carbine in 1890, and 40 more years until the great Phar Lap in 1930. The greatest record stays in our recent memory when Makybe Diva won the Cup three times in a row in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Noticeably missing is the great Gunsynd, who never won a Melbourne Cup.
My question is: In the race to ensure your children succeed at school and in life, how much are you investing? What price are you placing on them? Rank outsiders? Odds on? Favourite? Or just worth an each way bet?
My view is that you can’t afford for them not to be your favourites. They are our future. You need to be part of their schooling journey and invest heavily in their education to ensure they are winners.

PREP and YEAR 1 SCHOLARSHIPS ($150)
I encourage all parents who have Prep age or Year 1 students who are starting school next year to come and enrol their children as soon as possible. Parents who enrol their children by Tuesday, November 24 will go into a draw for a chance to win one of four scholarships. The scholarship includes the payment of their school levy and one new school uniform, valued at approximately $150.

PARENTING WITH THE BRAIN IN MIND
Welcome to Part 2 of 4 articles that examine how to look after your child’s brain. In this article John Joseph examines how the types of fats we ingest influence our brains and we take a quick look at vitamins, iron and nutritional supplements.

Students can bring either a tin or packet of pet food on the day, or make a gold coin donation to support this charity. We also welcome any additional donations from parents and carers. All items can be left at the school office.

WILDLIFE FOR KIDS

Students in Year 1 are looking forward to Dreamworld's Wildlife for Kids visit on Friday, 20 November.  The program brings Australian animals to the school for the children to see and even touch.  The students are learning about Australian animals this term and have been writing reports about them in class.  This will be a very exciting experience for all who participate.  The cost is $6.00 per child and there will be individual class sessions for each class.

PARENT OPINION SURVEYS

Parent opinion surveys were sent home earlier this week with all students. This is your opportunity to provide feedback to the school on what is working well, and what things we need to work on. Please ensure you return your completed survey to the school office by tomorrow (Friday 6th November). If you did not receive a survey, we have extra copies available in the office foyer.

Enrolments are now being taken for all year levels next year. If you know of someone who wishes to send their child to this school, please advise them to collect an enrolment package from the school office as soon as possible.

Don’t forget our Prep Open Day next Tuesday, 10 November from 9am – 11am.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

A big thank you to all of the students, classes, staff and families who filled shoe boxes with gifts this year.  There will be 60 very happy children somewhere in the Asia Pacific area this Christmas.  These are children that never receive gifts and are so blessed that people here care enough to send something for someone they don't even know.  We also raised enough money to cover the postage for 50 of the boxes.  This is a huge effort that our school put into this project this year.  Well done everyone.

MY FAVOURITE TEACHER – PARENT LETTERS

We all have teachers that come in different forms and specialities for me. My favourite teacher was a teacher by the name of Mrs Wollette, she taught me arts and crafts and was very patient with me. You had to be for I was very strong minded and at times a disobedient child. As I suffered from “ little miss know it all syndrome”. In 1989 back home in New Zealand where I attended school there was an incident where I was informed to paint a picture of a specific insect to my knowledge it was a spider, in doing so I painted this particular picture and the whole classroom walls. I was reprimanded and told to clean the entire classroom from top to bottom in front of my peers which was embarrassing unaware of my wrong doings at the tender age of 8.I did so but I noticed she stayed with me the entire time and nicely explained what I did wrong, she then proceeded to assist me following this unfortunate experience we talked and I was able to appreciate her more as a teacher. Through the understanding she gave me in not reporting this to my parents but instead showing me kindness and having patience with me. She also gave me the time and knowledge to a better future as well as a deserved lesson of always listening to all instructions given. To her credit I became a better student and passed and graduated. So as you can see I was not the saint that I portrayed to my children but I learnt and for this I thank her. Mrs Wollette always has a motto that we had to learn which I live by now the motto was the ingredients for a successful future is determination, perseverance and endurance. However the ingredients for failure are self doubt, yielding and dishonesty. This is in your hands and only you can determine what lies ahead for your future. We could learn from teachers who not only have the job of educating our children but also paving the way to our futures. So thankyou to all the teachers of this world to whom we owe gratitude, admiration and many thanks.
Liz Longland

I had lots of teachers but my favourite was Mr Stumer grade 5 and 7 he always saw my potential and encouraged me to be a great student and is part of the reason who I am today and I have passed some on to my kids and that makes me proud.

My favourite teacher was a teacher who made learning fun. He would take us outside where we built a nature area and this was our outdoor classroom. Instead of writing off the blackboard we would get involved in nature. We planted trees, studied insects, watched the weather and were learning without realising it. He showed the children respect, listened when we spoke so it was easy to do the same for him.

MY FAVOURITE TEACHER – STUDENT LETTERS

My favourite teacher is Miss Harwood she is really nice and helps me learn and get better at school work so when I grow up I can be smart like her.
Tammarah – Gayle

My first year at school is this year. I learn a lot of things at school because I got the best teacher in my class. She helps not just me but everybody who needs help. She explains things to make us understand the easy way. I like the way she reads stories. I love the way she teaches me how to correct the smallest number to the biggest number. Sometimes she gives us pictures to colour and she draws nice pictures of different animals. That’s all I can think of but hopefully I will do the best I can to be proud.

Miss McGovern is my favourite teacher because she is nice, caring, and helpful and she makes learning fun. That’s why Miss McGovern is my favourite teacher.
