Berrinba East You Can Do It Program!

You Can Do It! Education's (YCDI's) main purpose is to support communities, schools, and homes to optimise the school, emotional, and academic development of all young people. Its unique contribution is in identifying the social and emotional capabilities that all young people need to acquire in order to be successful in school, experience well-being, and have positive relationships that include making contributions to others and the community (good citizenship).

Our core purpose is the development of young people's social and emotional capabilities, including:

  • Confidence (academic, social)
  • Persistence
  • Organisation
  • Getting Along, and
  • Emotional Resilience

Central to the development of these 5 Foundations is instilling in young people 12 Habits of the Mind that support and nourish the 5 Foundations , including: Accepting Myself, Taking Risks, Being Independent, I Can Do It, Giving Effort, Working Tough, Setting Goals, Planning My Time, Being Tolerant of Others, Thinking First, Playing by the Rules, and Social Responsibility.

Another core purpose is also the elimination of social and emotional difficulties and disabilities ("Blockers") that constitute barriers to young people's learning and well-being including Feeling Very Worried, Feeling Very Down, Procrastination, Not Paying Attention/Disturbing Others and Feeling Very Angry/Misbehaving. YCDI is deliberate in restructuring Habits of the Mind that give rise to these Blockers and in the explicit teaching of alternative positive Habits of the Mind.

The "Big Picture" for Transforming Berrinba East SS to a YCDI School

Prep to Year 3

From Preparatory to Year 3 levels we have 5 Foundations Children need to be Successful and Happy

1) Connie Confidence - she explains to children what is means to be Confident using positive words "I know that it is ok to make mistakes when I'm learning something new".

2) Pete Persistence - he explains to children what it means to be persistent by using words "no task is too difficult for me".

3) Oscar Organisation - he will explain to children what it means to be organised. He uses words like "I always take care of my things by putting them away".

4) Gabby Get Along - she will explain to children what it means to get along with others. She uses words like "I take turns and play nicely with others".

5) Ricky Resilience - he will explain to children what the word 'resilience" means. Resilience means to "calm down' when you are upset.

They are also a wide range of YCDI songs that talk about the 5 Foundations that children can sing along too. Puppets are also used to make learning the YCDI program interactive and fun.

Year 4 to Year 7

Central to the development of the 5 Foundations are the 12 Habits of the Mind:

  • Accepting Myself (Self-Acceptance)-not thinking badly about yourself when you make a mistake
  • Taking Risks (Take Risks) -thinking that it's good to try something new, even though you might not be able to do it
  • Being Independent (Independence) -thinking that it's important to try new activities and to speak up even if your classmates think you're silly or stupid
  • Believing "I Can Do It" (Optimism) -thinking that when your work is hard, you can still do it. It also means not thinking you're not good at anything and never will be when you have difficulty with school work.
  • Giving Effort (Internal Locus of Control for Learning) -thinking that the harder you try, the more successful you will be as well as knowing that success is not caused by external factors (luck, ease of task) but by internal factors (effort).
  • Working Tough (High Frustration Tolerance) -thinking that in order to be successful in the long-term, you sometimes have to do things that are not easy or fun in the present.
  • Setting Goals (Goal Setting) -thinking that setting a goal can help you be more successful at a task.
  • Planning My Time (Time Management) -thinking about how long it will take you to do your schoolwork and planning enough time to get it done.
  • Being Tolerant Of Others (Tolerance of Others) -not thinking that when someone is mean to you, acts unfairly or is different that he or she is a totally bad person. It means not liking but accepting that all people are different and make mistakes.
  • Thinking First (Reflective Problem Solving) -thinking that when someone treats you badly, you need to think about different ways you can react, the consequences of each, and the impact of your actions on how the other person will feel.
  • Playing by the Rules (Tolerance of Limits) -thinking that by following important school and home rules, you will live in a batter world where everyone's rights are protected.
